If I were to erase my 64 bit fink. Then replace it with 32 bit fink
would fink commander work with 32 bit fink in /sw?
It should. Fink Commander only runs the command-line executables, and
doesn't really care what architecture you're using.
Thanks. I will try that then. Here goes a big change...
after installing fink in /sw and a new finkcommander in /Applications,
Fink Commander does not show any packages. This after a selfupdate and
update-all. I guess fink commander requires 64 bit fink

Not really. It was built before 64-bit Fink was even an option.

Try running "update table" from Fink Commander's menu.

I tried that, but the table remains blank 0 packages installed.
I ran seftupdate from a terminal and it listed packages. I installed
bundle-gnome. Many packages were installed.
But FinkCommander shows a blank table. I don't understand why it does
not list packages. ?

Fink Commander has its own table of packages, and you're experiencing a
disconnect between that and the databases that the command-line tools use.

Chris's idea may well help out here.

"Fink Commander initially failed when I tried running it under Lion. It
was happier after I dumped the Application Support and Preferences files
associated to it."

i.e. quit it and delete (in your home directory):

Library/Preferences/com.sburrious.finkcommander.plist
Library/Caches/com.sburrious.finkcommander
Library/Application Support/FinkCommander

Hmm...that worked for me just now when I was having problems on Lion.

Did you run Update Table again?

You might try a new copy of the application. I think it stores stuff
internally, and that has solved problems for people (including me) in
the past.

Yes I ran update table. nothing happened. I am on Snow Leopard. Do I
have the right copy of Finkcommander?

No clue. You never said what version you're running. :-)

What I meant by "new copy" is just to download another copy of whatever
version of Fink commander you're currently running, put it in a
different location than your current one, and run the new one. If it
works, you can copy it over the old one.
